The first screenshot for the Xbox Live Arcade version of Quake III: Arena has been released. The image (shown left) shows several new levels to be included in the Pi Studios port, with Arena Gate being the only holdover from the original Quake III. Up to 16 players will be supported across 40 multiplayer maps. Modes include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Tournament, Harvester and Overload. No launch date for the title has been announced, but Pi notes that a new build has been sent to Microsoft recently.

Quote: Taiwanese website UDN is reporting that Sony has signed production contracts to begin manufacturing a new model 'PS3 Slim'. Game publisher THQ and its joint-venture partner Jakks Pacific are in the midst of a little legal grappling at the moment that could impact the next year or so of development on future WWE games. As Reuters reports, THQ filed a lawsuit against Jakks after the company extended its joint videogame licensing agreement with World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. without THQ’s consent. Sega has recently taken a few attempts at developing games for the Wii that were targeted at adults rather than kids. House of the Dead: Overkill and Madworld haven't been incredibly popular, but they've done well enough to turn a profit. In Sega's eyes, this makes mature-themed games for the Wii a successful experiment, or at least one they're willing to continue. Other companies are looking to get into the act as well. It was inevitable that when customizable content became the norm in video games, the public would indulge in humorous creations appealing primarily to the mischievous teenage boy in all of us. I’ll admit my eyes grew wide when I set my eyes on Spore Hero for Wii. My mind began to race as I realized the creatures I had created in the original Spore that nearly got me banned from online play could be pitted against those of my friends’ creations in battle. The great thing about this current generation of consoles is the availability of indie gaming. Each platform has its own pros and cons of the indie game scene. As such, each platform offers a unique perspective. Currently, the most prominent is the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade (or so it seems to me). And Braid caught the eyes of many players about a year ago. And it’s about time we PC gamers got a chance to play it. So how does it hold up? It holds its own rather darn well on the PC and is a pitch perfect port of the XBLA game.

One of the first things that puzzled me about 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix when I started playing was that all but 10 of the 101 minigames were locked. It became clear soon enough, though, that locking the vast majority of the game’s content was the only way the game could trick you into playing for more than five minutes. Scoring enough points to unlock new games is the only possible incentive to keep playing this sorrowful collection of frustrating minigames.

If the mark of a good western FPS is making you feel like the most badass gunslinger this side of Tucson, Bound in Blood is the best yet. It's also a massive improvement on the 2006 original. Chances are you never played that, which is a shame. Call of Juarez was, if not a genuine diamond in the rough, at least a pleasant enough cubic zirconia. It had a decent story and solid shooting, marred mostly by godawful stealth sequences and infuriating stop-start action.

Dave Perry has a pretty compelling video demo of Gaikai, his new venture, on his blog. Like OnLive, this is also a “play a game remotely, stream a video and send controller data back over the wire” system, apparently just using Flash as the delivery mechanism. (1) No installing anything. (I’m running regular Windows Vista, with the latest Firefox and Flash is installed.) (2) This is a low-spec server, it’s a very custom configuration, fully virtualized. Why? To keep the costs to an absolute minimum. We had 7 Call of Duty games running on our E3 demo server recently.

Yesterday at State of Play, Bart Simon made a tongue-in-cheek suggestion: that journals like Games and Culture adopt a five-year ban on articles that focus on Second Life and World of Warcraft. He wasn't seriously arguing that this should happen but it is a pretty useful way to poke researchers about the degree to which these two places have become defaults for study as well as for play or social interaction in virtual worlds.So as a reminder, if you're doing research, justify a focus on them. It's been an insane week, even besides the passing of the King of Pop. There were major restructures announced at several of the game studios. Which makes sense -- due to the high production costs of video games (currently at about $25 million for an Xbox 360/PS3 title), many publishers and developers aggregated into giant corporations that resemble the Hollywood studio system. This helps offset the costs of diversified development, and prevents "betting the farm" on a single release.

Rain Stick is one of the more popular iPod Touch and iPhone apps out there today. It features one purpose, simulating a rain stick. The game involves killing zombies but not the innocent people inside a zombie-stricken city. The phone provides a window into a 3d town overrun with zombies. Robert Kotick spoke to The Times last week about Sony. Kotick does not feel confident with Sony and he is getting "concerned". He points out that the Xbox and the Wii platforms are much easier to develop for. He also mentions that Sony is expensive to support. We’re having another “Lunch with the Devs” chat in Battlegrounds this Tuesday, June 23, at noon CDT! (That’s 17:00 for you wild and crazy Greenwich Meridian Time people.) There’s a new wave of beta invites going out, so if you’ve played Warstorm in the last few days, check your email box. You MIGHT find an invitation to our beta in there! In the meantime, here’s a new image from the set: the Distracting Imp! Has the power to Get In Yo Face. This little guy may not be the most powerful warrior of all time, but at least he’s cute. According to a picture of a marketing poster send in from an employee at Toys'R'Us, the company is going to be jumping on the used game money train starting this August. We don't have an exact date yet or any details, but as soon as we do we will let you know. Toys'R'Us had been testing out used game trades in New York earlier this year, and it looks like it was a big enough success for them to roll out the program nationwide next month. Did you sign up for Club Nintendo since the program launched here in North America? If so, you probably got an e-mail from Nintendo about your Gold or Platinum status getting reset as of yesterday. Today, if you had indeed reached Gold or Platinum status as of yesterday, Nintendo is letting you know that you will be receiving a little something special from them at some point before the end of the year. At some point this month, they will send you an e-mail regarding this special reward, and how to claim it. So, what would you like it to be?
